Compost Program

Between 2018 and 2019, Elkhart County residents were able to receive a free compost bin to use for composting leaves and other materials. The program has been dis-continued for 2020. Although a compost bin is not required for composting leaves, a compost bin makes the process easier, more aesthetically pleasing, and more fun.

Why should you compost leaves?
  • Leaves are rich in nutrients and minerals. Somewhere between 50 to 80 percent of a tree's nutrients and minerals end up in the leaves. By composting leaves, you can transfer this nutrition to your soil.

  • It's free! If you have trees on your property, then you probably have autumn leaves. Instead of burning them or hauling them away, and then purchasing compost or mulch for your garden in the spring ... why not take advantage of this free source of "garden gold"?

  • You can compost as few or as many leaves as you like ... even composting a small portion of your leaves contributes to cleaner air in our community.

  • Click here to view our education handout on composting, which explains how to make leaf compost, leaf mold, and leaf mulch.
