What We're Doing: Project Timeline and Pilot Programs

In November of 2017, a Task Force of experts was assembled to provide advice and guidance on leaf management alternatives for Elkhart County. This Task Force consists of representatives from government, education, business, and civil society.

In January 2018, three public meetings were held on the topic of leaf burning and leaf management. With the County Commissioners reluctant to impose an unenforceable “burn ban” ordinance or an expensive government-led countywide leaf collection vacuuming program, these meetings encouraged more pragmatic, economically feasible, creative, and collaborative solutions to the leaf management issue. The Elkhart Truth, Goshen News, and WNDU all covered the outcomes of these meetings.

Currently, pilot programs are being designed and executed. These programs are briefly described below.

  • Residents of Elkhart County can receive a free compost bin, in exchange for completing a short sign-up form.

  • If you are interested in participating in this program and receiving a free compost bin, click here.

  • Educational handouts explain why leaf burning is harmful to human health and clean air, how to burn safely, and alternatives available to Elkhart County residents. To view these educational handouts, click here.

  • A landscaper information page is available to help residents who are looking to hire a landscaper to assist with fall and spring leaf management. The information page includes contact information, services offered, and rates. To download a print version of the information page, or to view an interactive map with the landscaper information, click here.

  • Elkhart County based groups can participate in a leaf collection competition from September 2018 to November 2018.

  • Groups who collect over 1 ton of leaves will receive a share of $50,000 in prize money!

  • If you are interested in this competition, please click here for more details.

  • Lessons on the benefits of leaf management alternatives, such as composting, will be designed for students in late elementary grades.
